Shared Journey
Sibling Bond, Community, Mixed Emotions
Dear Fellow Sib,
Sometimes being a sibling of someone with disabilities feels like walking a path that winds in unexpected directions. We stumble, we cry, we laugh harder than anyone else, and we keep moving forward.
What I’ve come to believe is this: we’re part of a unique community. We may not have asked for this journey, but it connects us in deep ways. Who else knows what it’s like to both ache and glow with pride over the same person? Who else understands the mix of responsibility, love, and fierce loyalty we carry?
This path isn’t always easy, but it’s ours—and we don’t have to walk it alone. We’re in this together.
With love and solidarity, Suzie
You're Not Alone
Glass Child, Strengths, Mixed Emotions, Community
Dear Fellow Sib,
I know what it feels like to be sitting in a room full of people and still feel like no one quite understands your life. Having a brother or sister with disabilities can feel isolating at times, especially when friends don’t see the behind-the-scenes reality of your family. The routines, the appointments, the unpredictability, the way everything has to bend around your sibling’s needs—it shapes us in ways that aren’t always easy to explain.
I want you to know—you are not alone. There are so many of us out here who understand the strange mix of emotions: the pride when our sibling does something everyone else thought was impossible, the frustration when the world isn’t kind, the worry about what the future holds, and yes, sometimes even the jealousy when attention is uneven. Those feelings don’t make us unloving. They make us human.
You are allowed to have your own needs, your own dreams, and your own voice. Don’t shrink yourself down or feel guilty for wanting things separate from your sibling. Your life matters just as much.
We carry a lot, but we also carry a unique strength. We grow into fierce advocates, loyal friends, and deeply empathetic people. If you ever feel unseen, remember that your story has value, and your journey deserves space.
You may not realize it yet, but you’re part of a whole community of Sibs who get it—and we’ve got your back.
Love, peace, and understanding!
